PC sales on the up
The market has not suffered as much as expected, with recession fears giving way to excitement for Windows 7.
PC sales are not dropping off as much as feared during the downturn, with industry analyst Gartner halving its prediction for decline from 12 to six per cent and pegging the market to stage an immediate comeback.
Bolstered by a stronger than expected fourth quarter, the industry avoided what would have been the biggest slump in PC sales history if Gartner’s forecasts had become reality.
The about face is confirmed with the analyst expecting sales to increase by 10 per cent over the next year, stimulated by the influx of buyers who delayed purchasing through the recession. The release of Windows 7 in October will also generate new sales, but the effect could kick in before that date because all Vista PCs bought from now until the operating system is released will be eligible to upgrade to Windows 7 for free.
