Microsoft makes cloud dreams a reality
Microsoft has struck a powerful blow in the battle for cloud supremacy.
Its Microsoft Online e-mail, collaboration and chat technology is being delivered to 30,000 Royal Mail employees under the terms of a recently announced deal. The software will be implemented and supported by CSC which has delivered desktop and server support for the UK postal service since 2003.
The choice to go with the Business Productivity suite, which is all hosted online and accessed through a browser rather than requiring software to be installed on each PC, is not only a vindication of the cloud computing concept, but also shows that Microsoft is equipped to tackle the threat posed by newcomers to the enterprise business software space, most notably Google Apps.
Google recently bragged that its $7.2 million deal providing business applications to Los Angeles city council, at the expense of the incumbent Microsoft, was a ‘watershed’ endorsement of its Google Apps portfolio.
