More than three-quarters of the worlds largest businesses are putting themselves at risk of cyber-attack due to data leakage, according to consultant KPMG, however those in the UK appear to be better protected than many global counterparts.

The study, which looked at Forbes 2000 companies, found the technology and software sectors as most likely to disclose information in metadata attached to online forums and newsgroups, with 16 per cent of businesses showing vulnerability because of old server software used to host websites.

“Our findings send out a clear message to business – while the internet may be your shop window to the world – it can also be a substantial security risk as well,” says KPMG director Martin Jordan.
