Despite only existing as a serious computing category for a couple of years, applications for the nascent tablet computer market will generate 15 billion dollars globally by 2015 according to a study by analyst In-Stat.
The research found that Apple will continue to dominate, but will see its current 95 per cent market share drop as other platforms, such as Android (pictured), mature. More than three-quarters of users currently purchase via the Apple’s App Store, with downloads of free applications outweighing those that carry a cost.
“Although many smartphone applications are appearing in tablet form, developers are having to recreate smartphone applications to adjust for differences in the tablet form factor, and while the different versions of the OSs are likely to merge in the future, tablet applications are likely to differ due to growing differences in the platform and usage models,” comments In-Stat analyst Amy Cravens.
