Businesses are refusing to soften their defensive stance towards social media, missing the opportunity presented by internal and external collaboration to transform the management of IT and customer support.
Research by Ovum ranks security as the primary trend driving enterprise IT in 2011, with the analyst citing fears over IT attacks through social media as the main reason why businesses are slow to adopt. This negative attitude means that businesses are failing to enjoy improved sharing of information and shared problem solving offered by including customers and suppliers in the communications mix.
Similarly, the potential for mobile working to reduce travel costs and improve efficiency is being strangled by fear, as businesses attempt to allay worries regarding security.
The other main concerns for IT executives this year will be sustainability and exploring the potential of cloud services.
