Visa Europe has launched a contact-less payment system that circumvents the lack of inbuilt near field communication (NFC) in Apple iPhone with a specially designed phone cover.

Called iCarte and created in partnership with The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), the NFC-enabled cover combines with a dedicated app, allowing customers to make transactions of up to £20 at certain retail outlets without entering a pin.  More than 9000 RBS customers registered for the payment method in just three days.

“A key industry challenge in bringing mobile contact-less payments to consumers is finding ways to enable existing smartphones that do not offer NFC technology.  Services like TouchPay show how NFC-enabled accessories for smartphones can deliver the future of payments today and help hasten mainstream adoption,” says Visa head of mobile Sandra Alzetta.
