Businesses bemoaning the development cost of apps should be more open-minded and consider the financial incentives. Research from Juniper found that although mobile apps are still in their infancy, some bookmakers receive 20 per cent of bets from smartphones and tablets.
Although the majority of online-bets are still placed from traditional PCs, bookmakers believe there will be a surge in customers that only use mobile devices to gamble, with wagers from this channel alone expected to reach $100 billion by 2017.
“Companies such as Ladbrokes, William Hill and Paddy Power are all seeing 40 per cent or more of online sportsbook customers placing bets via a mobile or a tablet,” says the report author Dr Windsor Holden.
