The Isle of Man (IoM) government has confounded the stereotype that says all public sector IT projects are destined to fail by successfully moving its entire service infrastructure to a cloud platform.

In partnership with EMC, the project has been implemented in just five months and includes the migration of over 1000 government applications, such as email, finance and CRM systems onto a cloud platform.

The IoM says data availability and system performance has increased eightfold, while operational costs have fallen by 15 per cent.  A flexible cloud infrastructure is also an ideal fit for the government because large seasonal population changes caused by events such as the TT road race means services have to be quickly scaled up and down.

“By virtualising our entire server platform and all service applications, the Isle of Man Government has significantly increased service levels as well as data flexibility and availability,” says IoM chief technology officer Peter Clarke.
